Keeping Downtown Clean and Recyclables Out of the Trash
If you’ve spent time downtown, you’ve probably seen the Downtown Sioux Falls (DTSF) Ambassadors at work. From cleaning and beautification to hospitality and safety, the Ambassador Program helps take care of the Downtown District every day. Their work also includes something we’re especially excited about: recycling.
Making Recycling Part of Downtown
Alongside trash, DTSF Ambassadors collect recycling across the downtown area, making it part of the everyday services they provide.
DTSF’s 2025 Impact Report also shows 247,355 pounds of trash hauled through the Ambassador Program. Based on those reported weights, recycling accounted for roughly one-third of the combined trash and recycling collected.
That’s a meaningful amount of material being separated for recycling instead of simply going into the trash and off to our landfill.
Making It Easier to Use
DTSF has also updated their labels on trash and recycling containers. The new stickers identify the containers as part of the Downtown Business Improvement District and include the Ambassador phone number so people can call or text when service is needed.
Clear containers, convenient access and reliable collection all help make recycling easier for downtown businesses, employees and visitors.
Being a BINfluencer doesn’t always mean starting a brand-new sustainability program. Sometimes it’s about building recycling into the everyday services people already rely on, and making it easier for more people to participate.
We’re excited to recognize Downtown Sioux Falls and the DTSF Ambassador Program for keeping downtown clean while giving recyclable material another place to go.
Keep it up, DTSF! ♻️
